Bluff-lined coves and the best smallmouth bite in the Ozarks.
Table Rock is the clearest big lake in Missouri, and the smallmouth that live in its bluffs are the reason a lot of Ozark anglers set their alarms for dawn. The fish here are golden, mean, and built for current.
Reading the Bluffs
The best smallmouth on Table Rock relate to the bluff ends and the transition banks where chunk rock meets gravel. A swimbait fished on a light jig head, slow-rolled along the bottom in twelve to eighteen feet of water, is the deal. Keep the boat in deeper water and cast to the shade line — these fish are spooky in the clear water.
“A Table Rock smallmouth in September fights like it has somewhere to be.”
As the sun gets high, follow the fish deeper with a drop-shot and a three-inch green-pumpkin worm. The bite gets softer but the fish get bigger. Bring polarized glasses, a quiet trolling motor, and the patience to fish one bluff end until the lake gives it up.
