A Weekend on Lake James

Priya Anand Lake James 4 min read June 2026

Paddleboards, pontoon picnics, and the perfect Pokagon sunset hike.

Lake James is the kind of place that resets your internal clock within an hour. Two days is enough to feel like a different person — if you build the weekend around water in the morning and woods in the evening.

Day One: Paddleboards & Picnics

Launch paddleboards from the marina before the wind comes up around eleven. Paddle the quiet channel into James Channel, beach the boards on a sandbar, and eat sandwiches you packed in a dry bag. By afternoon, swap the boards for a rented pontoon and find a swimming cove.

Day Two: The Pokagon Sunset Hike

Trail 3 in Pokagon State Park is a short, steep walk that ends at an overlook facing west. Time it so you reach the top thirty minutes before sunset. The lake turns to copper, the herons fly low, and you'll understand why people never quite leave this corner of Indiana.
