Docking Like a Pro

Doug Carmichael Indiana Lakes 7 min read May 2026

Ten timeless tips every pontoon captain should know before launch.

Nothing separates a confident captain from a nervous one faster than a crowded dock on a windy Sunday afternoon. The good news: docking is a skill, not a talent, and almost anyone can learn it.

Read the Wind First

Before you even approach, look at the flags on the dock and the ripples on the water. Wind is the single biggest variable, and it changes which side you want to land on. Always approach into the wind or current — whichever is stronger — so the elements help you stop.

“Slow is smooth, and smooth is docked.”

The Slow-Approach Rule

If you think you're going too slow, you're probably about right. Use short bursts of throttle to steer, never sustained power. Have a fender over the side and a line ready before you're close enough to need them. And assign one person — just one — to be your eyes on the dock.
